About the Session

On July 24, 2010, a Weekend Testing session commenced with participants Dhara Sapu, Eusebiu Blindu, Ajay Balamurugadas, Manjunath N, and Ben Simo. The mission was to download, install, and explore the Inflater application from Codeplex, with a focus on learning the application’s functionality and documenting its features rather than identifying bugs. Initially, there were challenges in launching the application, with some participants unable to run it due to non-Windows systems. The group decided to collaboratively document their findings using an online text editor, Typewithme.

The participants noted that the application was straightforward yet raised questions about its utility and potential for both benign and malicious purposes. They discovered that the application appends content to existing files rather than replacing them and explored scenarios such as the impact of file size on available RAM, destination file size exceeding disk space, and the behavior of the application with various input parameters. The session also highlighted the discrepancy between the application’s documentation and its actual behavior, particularly concerning the file size factor and line appending process. Despite some finding the application dull, the team engaged in a thorough analysis, comparing it to other tools like Perlclip for generating test data, and discussing its potential applications in testing scenarios.
